This year there was an outstanding line-up of bodegas offering an opportunity to taste a vast variety of red, white and rosé wines from Spain’s most prestigious wine region. Below is the full line of bodega exhibitors at Rioja Tapas Fantasticas 2014.

Berberana, founded in Rioja Alta in 1877 by Miguel Berberana is one of the most famous houses in Spain. Its modern winery in Cenicero has over 50,000 barrels in its ageing facilities, producing wine of the highest standard. The founder’s aim remains true for all the wines today: to consistently deliver the finest quality at an affordable price and to deliver the latest in innovation and technology.
Nestled in the foothills of Mendiguerra in the heart of Rioja Alta, Beronia is known for its range of classic and single varietal Riojas, all made with the greatest of respect for the environment. Winemaker Matias Calleja creates a highly distinctive style of Rioja, characterised by intensely fresh fruit and softly integrated oak.
Bodegas Consejo de la Alta S.A
Consejo de la Alta, brainchild of a group of wine-loving friends, began in 1990. A warm and welcoming winery, the winemakers strive to produce wines with complex aromas, colour and body, while retaining the traditional finesse of Rioja.
Based in the Alavesa region of Rioja, Grupo Faustino has been family owned and run since 1861 and represents four generations of winemaking. It remains one of the oldest family owned Spanish still wine groups. Faustino exports to 79 countries across the globe and is the number one exporter worldwide of Gran Reserva Rioja.
Bodegas Federico Paternina
Founded by Federico Paternina in 1896, this Rioja bodega is based in Haro, the epicentre of Rioja, and combines the very best of the modern and the traditional. Well-equipped cellars incorporate some of the latest technology along with tried and tested practices, while the vast barrel ageing cellar has been described as a ‘cathedral of wine’ and contains nearly 50,000 barrels of gently ageing wine.
Bodegas Las Orcas
Bodegas Las Orcas is located in the town of Laguardia, in the Rioja Alavesa region. It is a family-run project, started in the early 90s by the descendants of the founders of the CVNE winery and is now owned by Rai and his wife Cristina. The focus, as Rai describes, is on making wine with soul, which expresses the character of each vintage and the magnificent terroirwhere the vines are planted.
Bodegas Muriel was founded in 1926 by Mr. José Murúa in Elciego, Rioja Alavesa, northern Spain. His son Julián Murúa took on the family business in 1986 and nowadays it is the job of the third generation to run the winery.
Bodegas Perica is a family winery that has its origins in 1912 when Don Juan García started out by selling wine to the locals and bordering towns. He attributed the winery’s success to his son Don David García (nicknamed Perica), who is named after and inherited the project.
Bodegas Ramón Bilbao
Established in 1924 by Ramon Bilbao Murga, this modern winery is situated in Haro in Rioja Alta, on the banks of the River Ebro. The Bodegas owns some 75 hectares of vineyards and winemaker Santos Calahorra makes wine with a modern style which has earned the winery many accolades and awards.
Bodegas Riojanas was founded in 1890 by two families and was born out of passion and tradition for wine making. With over a century of winemaking tradition, Bodegas Riojanas controls more than 300 hectares of the best vineyards in Cenicero, San Vicente de la Sonsierra and nearby towns and villages. Whilst Rioja’s quintessential grape variety is Tempranillo, Bodegas Riojanas also owns one of the largest surface areas dedicated to Mazuelo and Graciano in the wine region.
Bodegas Tarón was born as a result of four small villages in Rioja Alta pooling their vineyards and their knowledge, accumulated over generations dedicated to farming and winemaking to launch an exciting project in the world of wine.
Being the first to make a cask fermented white wine, rediscovering the bleeding method for making rosé and producing single-variety wines such as Maturana and Tempranillo Blanco are just a few of the small parts of history which make Bodegas Valdemar. Its wines are synonymous with quality, tradition and a deep love of wine.
For over 50 years, Campo Viejo has been crafted in the heart of Rioja at Bodegas Campo Viejo, one of Europe’s leading wineries. Its dedication to winemaking, combined with advanced technology, has allowed the team to create modern twists on traditional methods to create approachable and progressive styles of Rioja.
The Castle of Clavijo is located in the heart of the Rioja region, just 6km away from the Castillo Clavijo winery. A crossroad of valleys, rivers and mountains where the Continental, Mediterranean and Atlantic climates meet, this is a unique landscape that is ideal for growing grapes. It is a landscape full of diversity, where Rioja’s indigenous varieties, led by the delicate Tempranillo, find the most suitable terroir for growing.
Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España (CVNE) was established in 1879 by two brothers, Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa. Five generations on, CVNE is still in family hands. CVNE has three wineries in Rioja; Cune in Haro, and Viña Real and Contino both located near Logroño. Cune is the modern expression of traditional winemaking from Rioja Alta, and its Monopole range comprises vibrant, youthful Riojas reflecting a modern, fresh style of wine. Imperial was created by Cune in the 1920s with the aim of producing only top quality Reserva and Gran Reserva wines from the very best vintages.
Domeco de Jarauta
The Domeco de Jarauta family has been involved in wine since the late 19th century but the modern day story began in 1995 when Jose Vincent Domeco de Jarauta built a modern winery and began to commercialise his own wines. In 2005, he created the winery, Domeco de Jarauta with his son (also Jose Vincent) joining as head wine-maker.
El Coto de Rioja
El Coto de Rioja dates back to 1970 and its establishment signified a new style of Rioja, removed from the more traditional patterns. The winery aims to maintain a good price/quality ratio across all its products, including its world-renowned Crianza.
Faustino Rivero Ulecia
Since the founder – Olegario – began his adventure in the late nineteenth century, the Rivero family has always been linked to the cultivation, processing and ageing of wines in the region of Amedo.
Today, the fourth and fifth generations of the Rivero family continue at the head of the winery, personally directing all of its operations. Its family structure has evolved into a modern, professional company able to meet the needs of the most demanding markets, present on five continents.
Owed by the Beltrán family, Finca Egomei is an estate of 30 hectares of Tempranillo and Graciano vineyards. The team pays a lot of attention to the vineyards, as it believes that you cannot make a good wine if you do not have good grapes. The treatment and care of the vineyards is made with the objective of getting grapes of high quality with the average yield per hectare being just 4,000kg.
Founded in 2004, Finca Nueva is located in Briones, Rioja Alta. The winery produces two different ranges of wines: the fresh wines such as Finca Nueva Tempranillo and the oak-aged wines such as Finca Nueva Barrel Fermented. Miguel Angel De Gregorio, the winemaker and owner is also winemaker and owner of Finca Allende.
Rioja Gran Familia comes from Bodegas Castillo de Fuenmayor, located near Briones at the heart of Rioja Alta. This winery belongs to a family with one of the longest traditions in Rioja winemaking and the winemaker has access to some of the finest wines in Rioja.
Hacienda El Ternero
El Ternero is a 250 hectare enclave of Castille in Rioja Alta. Its medieval origins date back to 1077. Sheltered by the mountains, among olive trees and forests is a group of buildings that were formerly used as a monastery, military headquarters, school, hospital for pilgrims on the ‘St. Jaques Way’ and chapel, which remains open today to shelter the saint, La Virgen de La Pera, also the name of the winery’s young red wine.
Laithwaite’s Wines (Gómez Cruzado, Bodegas Larchargo, Bodegas Muriel)
Tony Laithwaite started out in 1969 with a small van bringing wines of authenticity and character directly to customers in the UK. Today Laithwaite’s delivers wine to over 700,000 customers and represents a number of Rioja wineries, including Gómez Cruzado, Bodegas Larchargo, Bodegas Muriel.
La Rioja Alta S.A.
On July 10, 1890, five Basque and Rioja-based vine growers created “Sociedad Vinicola De La Rioja Alta” in Haro. This was the beginning of a fascinating business venture in which the only dream of the five founders was to craft and age high quality wines. The European spirit which is so popular today was present in La Rioja and in the winery from the very beginning. Mr Vigier, a French expert, was hired as technical manager and the team was soon familiar with what is now known as “classic” vinification. The company changed its name to “La Rioja Alta” in 1891.
Leza García is a third generation family wine cellar, where the team takes great personal care in carrying out each and every one of the processes in the lifecycle of the wine. The family members cultivate their own vineyards, situated in the Najerilla river Valley, in the heart of the Rioja Alta region. Their motto is “sustainable quality at all costs over volume” and they use grapes only produced and cultivated by the small and highly experienced family team.
Five generations of winemaking knowledge have been passed down through the Fernández de Manzanos family to create a twenty-first century winery. Finca Manzanos owns 210 hectares of its own vineyards, and produces Rioja wines under the brands Finca Manzanos, Viña Marichalar, Viña Berri, Marqués de Butrago, De Alto Amo, Más de Víctor, Voché, and V.
Marqués de Cáceres
Bodegas Marqués de Cáceres was founded in 1970 by Enrique Forner, a prime mover in bringing Rioja into the modern world, bringing with him expertise acquired in Bordeaux’s Haut-Médoc region. The winery is known for a range of wines which show rich concentration and intense fruit and aromas, and will be showing a range of reds, whites, and rosés at Rioja Tapas Fantasticas.
Marqués de la Concordia
Marqués de la Concordia wines are the result of the blend of New World innovation and technology in winemaking and the best traditions, terroir and know-how in Spain. Marqués de la Concordia delivers a New World Style wine that is bold and fruit driven using only the finest grapes.
Marqués de Reinosa
The bodega was established in Autol in Rioja Baja in the late 19th Century by Don Joaquin Garralda Oñate, the Marquis of Reinosa. The red wines sold under the Reinosa label are 100% Tempranillo and the winery also produces a modern white, made from 100% Viura with no oak influence and a rosado made from Garnacha.
Marqués de Terán
The Bodega is located on a hill in the highest part of the town. It is a real balcony with views of the Ebro Valley and the Sierra de Cantabria, the Sierra of La Demanda and Ollauri and its vineyards. Its structure perfectly integrates with the landscape, following the traditional construction of the vineyard’sarea that presides over the high part of Ollauri, a mound whose slopes have traditionally been used to excavate its characteristic depths.
Marqués de Vargas
Grupo Vinícola Marqués de Vargas S.L. is a business venture that began in 1989 with the creation of the prestigious winery Bodega Marqués de Vargas in Rioja. The group’s wines stand out for their superb balance of traditional values and the most advanced technological artistry of modern oenology.
Bodegas Muga is a family owned winery characterised by traditional production methods such as the use of fresh egg whites to fine red wines, as well as using gravity to rack wines every four months. The whole production process, from fermentation to storage and ageing takes place in wooden casks. The vineyards span 135 hectares and are located in the Rioja Alta region.
Bodegas Navajas is a family owned winery based in the small village of Navarrete, Rioja Alta. Since its inception in 1918, generation after generation has tried to be faithful to the principle of “making quality wines”. The modern facilities include three ageing cellars for 10,000 barrels, and a bottle ageing cellar for 200,000 bottles, both of which are equipped with the latest technology for the treatment and care of the wines.
These days, Real Rubio has over 100 hectares of planted vines with a range of grape varieties and ages amongst them. The vineyards are home to most of the official varieties of the DOCa Rioja: Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Viura, Verdejo and also house 60 year-old vines alongside others which are less than a decade old. This diversity, managed using novel, environmentally respectful growing practices which seek to extract the best qualities from each parcel, provides Real Rubio with excellent raw materials for making wine.
Founded in 1882, Rioja Vega even predates the official creation of the Denominación de Origen as a guarantee of quality. With a winemaking tradition dating as far back as the origins of wine culture in this region, the philosophy of Rioja Vega is to preserve the characteristic flavours of high-quality grapes from old vineyards to their cellars to the glass. After over 130 years, the history and heritage of the winery is notable in the wines.
Founded in 1937, located in the northern, Alavesa area of the famed Rioja region, Solar Viejo winery and vineyards have benefited fully from the Freixenet Group’s substantial investment and expertise since 2004. Lifelong collaboration has nurtured a close, successful working relationship with local vine-growers.
Viña Pomal is one of the oldest estates in Rioja and was one of the first registered bottlers in the region. Comprising a range of premium Tempranillo-based wines, Viña Pomal is a quality reference point for classic Reserva wines in Rioja Alta.
Created by the Vivanco family in the heart of Briones is this new and modern winery; a flagship of oenological innovation for the production of high quality wines. The winemaking philosophy is to maximise the natural and unique character of the different categories and varieties of the wines. Varieties of Rioja
Depending on the ageing process, Rioja wine can be put into one of four categories:
Young wines: Wines in their first or second year, which keep their primary freshness and fruitiness.
Crianza wines: Wines which are at least in their third year, having spent a minimum of one year in casks. For white wines, the minimum cask ageing period is 6 months.
Reserva wines: Selected wines of the best vintages with an excellent potential that have been aged for a minimum of 3 years, with at least one year in casks. For white wines, the minimum ageing period is 2 years, with at least 6 months in casks.
Gran Reserva wines: Selected wines from exceptional vintages which have spent at least 2 years in oak casks and 3 years in the bottle. For white wines, the minimum ageing period is 4 years, with at least one year in casks.
